A Closer Look at the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric
Ford “charges” ahead with modern technology.
CAR FRONT VIEW
Ford’s new electric car is here. It uses the same name as the Mustang gas-powered vehicle and will be sold as an SUV to separate the two for marketing purposes. Unlike many other SUV designs, this rig is unlikely to be taken off the pavement, however. A rock crawler this is not!

EMBLEM
The front radiator grille is missing, giving a hint this is not a gasoline-powered car. Another Mustang emblem is in front to convince onlookers what this is.

PRICE
There are many versions of the Mach-E to pick from. Starting at $44K, the base car has 266 horsepower and 230 miles of the claimed range. This test vehicle is an upgrade with 346 rated hp and a listed range of 270 miles. It starts at $49K and hit $56K after the usual options. In October, the top-of-the-line GT will be hitting the Ford showrooms. It will boast 480 hp, 634 lbs./ft. of torque, and 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. It’s yours for about $65K.

CHARGER
Since this is all electric in operation, you have to plug it into a socket to charge. A 240-volt plug can provide about 20/30 miles of range per hour, for a total time of 10/15 hours to "fill-er-up". A typical household 115 outlet can be used but gets only 3 miles per hour of charging. Ford is hooked to a national network of about 13,000 charging stations. We were informed that some of these superchargers can provide up to 40 miles of range per hour, but these were not used in our drive.

The gauge cluster is very simple and shows the amount of driving range left on the screen.

INFO SCREEN
The info screen is very large. It looks intimidating, but is actually very simple to use. That is good news as most of the cars functions are done here.

GLASS ROOF
We were surprised to find the roof is made of glass. There is no sliding cover to block the sun. Since this car was being driven in the summer desert, where temps were reaching over 100 degrees on a daily basis, there was plenty of cause for alarm! But surprisingly, the cabin stayed very cool. Overall, this design worked very well, but you have to wonder what it costs to repair the glass should it crack due to a minor accident.

DRIVE
Why buy this Mustang Mach E instead of the competition? After getting behind the wheel, there are many reasons. First, it is designed and made by a real car company. Secondly, the build quality is excellent with a solid body structure. And what is really important, this vehicle drives and feels like a real car. The steering, ride, handling, and overall experience make long trips very pleasant.

REAR
It is obvious Ford engineers spent a lot of time and effort on this Mustang design. Judging from the high consumer demand, this car will be a real winner.
