Hertz Is Selling Its Fleet of Limited Edition Shelby Mustang Mach-E
Hertz is looking to part ways with used examples of its Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT EVs, but will they be collector’s items?
Rare Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT EVs
Hertz is now selling a limited selection of Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT EVs previously exclusive to its rental fleet. Each car sports Hertz's iconic black and gold livery, along with several unique design touches, and is priced around $65,000. This move is a nod to Hertz's historic “Rent-A-Racer” program from the 1960s, which allowed enthusiasts to experience the thrill of driving a Shelby Mustang without buying one. While today’s offering is a fully electric vehicle, Hertz aims to capture similar interest from collectors, especially given the limited availability of these models.
Distinctive Modifications But No Performance Boost
Unlike standard Mustang Mach-E GTs, these Hertz-exclusive versions come with a few modifications. They feature a vented hood, carbon fiber rocker trim, and a front splitter, adding an extra layer of visual appeal. Special GT-H wheel caps and exclusive Shelby badges also adorn the vehicle. One standout feature is Borla’s Active Performance Exhaust Sound System, which simulates the sound of gas-powered performance cars—a unique touch for an EV. While these changes enhance the vehicle's aesthetics and sound, they do not add any extra horsepower or performance improvements beyond the standard Mach-E GT capabilities.
The $65,000 Question
Hertz’s asking price of $65,000 may give buyers pause, especially since these vehicles have typical mileage for ex-rentals, ranging from around 10,000 to over 63,000 miles. The question of whether this model is a good investment depends on how much value buyers place on rarity and exclusivity.
Is Rarity Enough?
Only 100 of these Shelby Mach-E GTs were produced, and private buyers could not acquire one from Ford or Shelby, making this Hertz sale the only chance to own one. Yet, without performance upgrades, the appeal may lie primarily in the limited-edition status rather than any tangible enhancements over a standard Mustang Mach-E GT.
Revisiting Hertz’s “Rent-A-Racer” Legacy for the EV Era
These Shelby Mustang Mach-E GTs offer a fresh spin on Hertz’s “Rent-A-Racer” tradition, which in the 1960s gave drivers access to high-powered Shelby Mustangs that have since become prized collector’s items. While it remains to be seen if this electric version will hold the same lasting appeal, its scarcity could make it attractive to a niche market of EV enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate limited-edition models.
