This 700HP SEMA Mustang is Radical Retro
Roush power for a great Mustang design project.
Getting retro right
When you try and apply retro styling details, to a vehicle as iconic as Ford's Mustang, the challenge is immense. But NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Blaney knows the value and brand legacy of Ford's motorsport efforts. And his idea was to pay homage to the GT40, by virtue of a contemporary Mustang.
Drawing inspiration from 1966
The surface color balance for this SEMA retro Mustang was inspired by the 1966 Daytona 24 hour Ford racers. More specifically, the GT40s which participated in that race, as part of their preparation to finally go across and beat Ferrari at Le Mans.
Roush to the rescue
Powering this SEMA retro suited 'Stang is a supercharged version of the Ford 5-liter V8 engine. The car has a Roush supercharger that delivers 700hp and 610 b-ft of torque. Those are more than tidy gains over the factory's stock 5-liter V8. There is also a MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust system, to make sure that those V8 burbles are a touch more intense.
Buckets up front
This SEMA retro Mustang features a cabin that details the caliber of upgrades you'd expect from a NASCAR driver. The seats are sourced from NRG and are shaped as full racing buckets. Keeping the driver and front passenger secure are six-point harnesses that would be at home on any car worth its metal.
Minimalist helm
Taking things into the cabin of the car is a new racing spec steering wheel. It features classic circuit driver construction, with a thin, high-grip rim, and exposed metal spokes. There is also a yellow center marker, for proper steering wheel calibration and wheel alignment.
Very hip hoops
Rolling in this SEMA homage Mustang's wheel arches are some very cool wheels. They are 20-inch Fifteen52 Podium Super Touring hoops and even have additional aero covers for the front wheels. Like any true road racer, these wheels are center-locking.
More stopping power and better suspension
Hiding behind those striking wheels are some trick stoppers and suspension bits. Wilwood performance brakes help keep reins on this Mustang, with four-piston calibers. And for those who believe in adjusting their suspension to different surfaces and roads, there are ST Suspension XTA coilovers.
Not a single bad angle on this one
Khyzyl Saleem was responsible for the graphic design, executing Ryan Blaney's vision. The end result is a very potent Mustang road racer, which is wonderfully on-trend with Ford's rich motorsport history.
