5 Slides Where We Try to Figure Out What's Wrong With the New Mustang

The 2018 Mustang's looks have been polarizing, to say the least of its recent debut. Let's look beyond the exterior and try to figure out what may be bothering the refreshed model so much.

1. No V6 in the U.S.

Could it be that the new Mustang is lamenting the loss of the V6 engine for those in the United States? I mean if you think about it, it makes sense that Ford would ax the option from the lineup. The 2.3-liter Ecoboost i4 makes more power across the power band, and then when you'd like more grunt, there's the 5.0-liter V8 to take its placement under the hood. The only bad thing we can think of is that to get that much power from the Ecoboost, you need to use premium gas while the V6 would make that on regular petrol.

2. No Authentic Tacos for Mustang?

Recently, Ford announced that they were canceling plans to open a billion dollar plant in Mexico and instead moving to Michigan to expand an existing plant. If the new Mustang was really hoping for some authentic Mexican food, then I can see why the sour puss. For crying out loud, no person should be denied delicious tacos!

3. Thinking of the Super Duty

People will come to know that the new Mustang is all about a dual identity: one a bruising pugilist and the other a sensitive car in touch with its feelings. Maybe it's thinking of its Ford family member the 2017 F-Series Super Duty and the flaw that was just announced. Some 8,000 vehicles are currently out in the wild that lacks a reinforcement bracket that would keep the fuel tank from parting ways with the hefty truck.

4. New Exhaust or Chronic IBS?

When you choose the V8 engine you get an additional toy to hold over the person who bought an EcoBoost model: the dual-mode exhaust system. What's so special about this system, you ask? Well, not just the visual treat of having nice chunky exhaust tips poking out from the back of your car, you get to actually turn up the volume of all 435 horsies coming from your engine!

5. Maybe It's the Transmission?

It's all the changes that Ford has done to the new Mustang, including a 10-speed automatic no matter your choice of engine. That's right, the same 10-speed transmission from the F-150 will now be available for your beloved Mustang. In case you're wondering just how to feel about this, I find that emotions should be made with a mix of insightful curiosity with a healthy dose of WTF shaken over an i4 / V8 and garnished with a sprig of wait-and-see.
