7 Fastest Mustangs Ever Produced

1. 2003-2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra

The 2003-2004 SVT Cobra was affectionately dubbed "The Terminator" thanks to a supercharged 4.6 liter V8 that produced 390 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. It was a huge step up from the previous generation Cobra, with stronger internals designed to handle the extra boost of the Eaton blower. In stock form, the Terminator ripped from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 13.1. Some have clocked mid 12 second quarter mile runs, however, with just minor tuning.

2. 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R

Ford fitted a 385 horsepower, 385 lb-ft of torque 5.4 liter V8 in this special version of the 2000 SVT Cobra - dubbed the "R" for "Race" A mere 300 were produced, all without unnecessary things like stereos, air conditioning, cruise control, or a rear seat. Though the Cobra R was designed for fast cornering on the track (with that huge rear wing that actually produced downforce), it was also fast in a straight line. 0-60 took a mere 4.4 seconds, with a quarter mile coming in 12.9 seconds at 110.8 miles per hour.

3. 2015-17 Ford Mustang GT

Oh, what a time to be alive! When you can buy a brand new, base Mustang GT off the showroom floor and outrun cars like the old Terminator Cobra and Cobra R, you know you are living in the golden era. That's what you get with every fifth generation Mustang GT - 441 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque from the Coyote 5.0 V8. It's good enough for a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds and a 12.8 second quarter mile.

4. 2007-2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The rebirth of the Shelby GT500 was a real jaw dropper, and it's still incredibly fast and powerful a decade later. The 5.4 liter supercharged V8 produced an astonishing 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. It was good enough to propel this Shelby from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, with the quarter mile coming in 12.7 seconds at 116 mph.

5. 2012-2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302

Yet another blast from the muscle car past, this modern version of the Boss 302 was designed to be a corner carver like the original, but is better in every way. With 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque from a modern 5.0 liter Coyote, it can hold it's own in a straight line, with 0-60 taking a mere 3.97 seconds, and the quarter mile flying by in 12.3 at 115.8 miles per hour. The old 1969 version tool nearly 7 seconds to get to 60, and 14.6 seconds to do the quarter.

6. 2016-2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

Sadly, the GT500 went the way of the dinosaur, but Mustang fans have to be happy with its replacement - the GT350 and racier GT350R. The high revving, naturally aspirated, flat plane crank V8 produced 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque in either trim. But the "R" version is lighter for track use, with no back seat, air conditioning, or radio (though they can all be added back in if so desired). The result? 0-60 takes only 3.9 seconds, with a quarter mile taking only 12.1 seconds.

7. 2013-2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

When it comes to price/performance ratio, it's hard to beat the mighty 2013/14 Shelby GT500. Not only is the GT500 the most powerful Mustang ever produced (662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque), it was also the most powerful production V8 ever made at the time. That snarling, supercharged 5.8 liter aluminum beast propelled the GT500 to 60 in 3.5 seconds, with the quarter mile a blur at 11.6 seconds. Those times make it the quickest and fastest production Mustang to date.
