7 Forgotten Ford Special Editions

Ford Motor Company has a long and storied history in the automobile industry. There have been literally dozens upon dozens of makes and models produced over the years -- some original, some iterations of a previous model. The following are some of the forgotten cars that have rolled off the Ford assembly line in years' past.

1. Ford ZX2

Ford's ZX2 was a coupe derived from the third-generation Ford Escort. It was first introduced by Ford in 1998 and sold until the 2003 model year. The car featured a 2.0-Liter Zetec DOHC I4 engine and two types of transmission: 5-speed G5M for the manual model and a 4-speed F-4EAT for the automatic option. Its predecessor was the Ford Probe and successor is the Ford Focus.

2. Ford EXP

The EXP was a sports compact coupe that was produced and sold by Ford Motor Company in North America from the 1982 to 1988 model years. A 3-door hatchback, the car featured an FF layout and ran on the Ford CE14 platform. Of the same family as the Ford Escort, it was eventually succeeded by the Ford Probe.

3. Ford High Country Mustangs

Ford's High Country Mustangs were a special promotion vehicle for Colorado-area Ford dealers. Despite a strong national case of Mustang fever, sales slowdowns were occurring in certain markets during the line’s second full year of production and the car was no longer produced thereafter.

4. Ford Pinto

The Ford Pinto is a front-engine, rear-drive subcompact car manufactured and marketed by Ford from 1971 thru 1980. While of the same family as the Ford Mustang II version, the car's actual predecessor was the Ford Cortina and its eventual successor was the Ford Escort.

5. Ford Torino

Built as a competitor in the intermediate market segment, the Ford Torino ran from 1968 to 1976. It succeeded the Ford Fairlane and was succeeded by the Ford LTD II.

6. Ford F150 Champion's Edition

Local New England dealers customized the Ford F-150 following the New England Patriots' championship run in 2006. It featured special 20" wheels, a unique-looking grill, along with the team's logo on the fend and tailgate. A limited amount of the model was made.

7. Ford Explorer Ironman's Edition

This truck was built especially to target Ironman athletes and those who aspire to be Ironmen. The Explorer Ironman edition was touted as a take on the company's popular Explorer model with special focus placed the "strength, endurance and passion" that drive Ironman competitors. Numerous colors were available, including Orange Frost, along with a range of customization options.
