A lifetime of sibling rivalry among Ford’s mightiest Mustangs

When prefaced by “Shelby” or “Boss,” 302, 350, 351, 427, 428, 429 and 500 represent more than the size of the V8 engine that can be found under a Mustang’s hood; they tell everyone that they are in the presence of an ultimate performance model of the original Pony Car. And as one can tell from this slice of RM Auctions’ Auburn Fall Sale, Ford not only sold both of these performance “brands” alongside its full stable of Mustang models, it did so simultaneously over decades. So while Ford might be all about Shelbys right now, don’t be surprised when they bring back the Boss…

1969 Shelby GT350 Fastback [$77,000]

One can argue the “realness” of GT350s built after Ford brought the production in-house, but there’s no denying that Lot #3139 is just amazingly beautiful. The car is painted in rare Gulfstream Aqua which is attractive and a refreshing change from the more typical shades. That it came with the White Bucket Seat Interior (and A/C) makes it even rarer, but that’s not the kicker. That bright white upholstery you’re seeing with its born-with Sport Deck rear seat is all original! Also original is the Ram Air 351-cu.-in. 4V V8 that gives it its go-fast via a Cruise-O-Matic transmission, power steering, and front disc brakes.

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 [Est. $65k-$70k] UNSOLD

According to its accompanying Marti report, this Grabber Blue-over-white Boss 302 was born four days late, on April 21, 1970. In addition to the usual bits of kit, it came with the optional four-speed close-ratio Hurst manual transmission, Traction-Lok differential with 3.91 axle ratio. Unlike the aforementioned GT350 (Lot #3139) which Marti reported to be a one-of-one, records show Ford built 11 Lot #3180s. But the fact that this one’s not only real and restored but ready to go at RM’s Saturday sale makes this bright blue Boss 302 unique in its own right.

2007 Ford Shelby GT500 [$43,450]

Now we can’t say for 100 percent certain, but we’re pretty sure that Lot #2033 is the only one of its kind, too. Sure, it has the same 500 horsepower supercharged 5.4-liter V8 and six-speed stick as its siblings, and most are likely to still have their factory manuals and Monroneys. Heck, it’s not even the only Torch Red stripe-delete car for 2007 and there were 28 of those!  No, what makes this car special is that it lets you time-travel back 12 years and experience buying a still-in-the-wrapper, never-registered ’07 GT500. Not only just any GT500 but one with only 10.4 miles on its clock (as of its cataloging) for… around its original MSRP. [Hey, not all “instant collectible” gambles pay off. The previous owner’s pain is your gain.]

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca [$37,400]

Continuing the theme is Lot #3166, a model that doubled-down on exciting appellations. Available in silver or black, the Laguna Seca version of the newly-resurrected Boss 302 model featured the usual track-rat features like a front spoiler, rear splitter, Recaro seats and a cross-brace where the back seat used to be. Offered from the collection of an automotive dealership empire at no reserve, this 600-mile-old model is so minty-fresh nobody bothered to open the box of—let alone install—that front splitter, something quite indicative of a car “pickled” when new and destined to never turn a wheel in anger anywhere, let alone on the hallowed ground from which it gets its name.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake [$60,500]

Recently Ford has been using the Shelby name to denote its highest-performance Mustangs—like Lot #2033. However, as with the originals, the company now known as Shelby American Inc. has kept the tradition of turning Ford’s finest up to—and well past—11 alive. And while this one could be tuned to 850+ horsepower, the original buyer of Lot #1112 went for style more than speed. Shelby left the engine alone, limiting their modifications to better exhaust sound, cooling, handling, stopping and appearance bits. Add to those mods the requisite abundance of badging inside and out (and that badass appellation).

2017 Ford Shelby GT350 R [$66,000]

Well, this is where things get weird. You can, right now, buy from Ford a brand-new 2019 version of Lot #3121 that’s traveled fewer than this car’s already-meager 300 miles. This color, not one of the three blue hues on offer now, however, so if you want one of the “43 GT350Rs delivered in this color combination for 2017,” this is your chance. It comes with all of the stock goodies including manuals and wheel lock tools, plus the track and electronics packages.
