Ford Mustang Mach E Rally Was Developed on Its Very Own Dirt Track
Ford built an entire Rallycross dirt track exclusively as the testing grounds for the Mach E Rally.
Expanding the Mustang Legacy
Ford's launch of the Mustang Mach-E in 2021 marked a significant evolution of the iconic Mustang brand. This all-electric crossover, inspired by classic Pony Car design, diversified the Mustang lineup, merging performance with versatility. Last year, Ford further embraced this versatility by introducing the Mach-E Rally, an off-road variant designed to tackle rugged terrains while maintaining its performance roots.
Rigorous Development Process
To ensure the Mach-E Rally could handle the demands of rally driving, Ford constructed a bespoke rallycross course at its Michigan proving grounds. This project was meticulously planned, with engineers consulting rallycross drivers and analyzing various tracks. They employed computer simulations to perfect the layout, ensuring the course would provide realistic and challenging conditions for testing the vehicle's capabilities.
Torture Testing for Durability
The newly developed track allowed Ford to subject the Mach-E Rally to an extensive 500-mile torture test. This rigorous testing regimen simulated a decade of monthly rallycross racing, pushing the vehicle to its limits. The result is a Mach-E Rally that boasts a 0.78-inch increase in ground clearance and a new RallySport drive mode, which enhances off-road performance with features like bigger slides, linear throttle response, and aggressive damping.
Performance Without Compromise
Despite its off-road enhancements, the Mach-E Rally retains its impressive performance credentials. The dual-motor setup delivers 480 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, enabling the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Additionally, the vehicle offers an EPA-estimated range of 265 miles, combining robust off-road capability with the speed and power expected from a Mustang.
Purpose-Built Rally Features
The Mach-E Rally's off-road capabilities are supported by a 1-inch lift over the Mach-E GT, rallycross-tuned shocks and springs, and underbody shielding. These features protect the vehicle from the harsh conditions of off-road driving. Its design also includes aggressive accents, such as a black-painted steel roof and rally-inspired fog lights, making it as visually striking as it is functional.
Engineering Precision
The process began with a grassy field, which was transformed into a sophisticated testing ground using computer-aided design. This meticulous approach ensured that every aspect of the track, from elevation to timing, mimicked real-world rally conditions. The result is a vehicle that not only performs well in controlled tests but is also ready for the unpredictable challenges of off-road driving.
