Must-See 1965 Mustang Restomod Goes Up For Auction
The amazing craftsmanship of this 1965 Mustang Fastback restomod isn't the only thing about it that will have you do a double take.
A 20,000-Hour Vision
This custom 1965 Ford Mustang GT 427 has the automotive enthusiast world taking notice for its high-caliber craftsmanship, thanks to Wicked Rides, a custom building team that poured 20,000 hours over two decades into this show-stopping creation. The car made its debut in 2023 at the SEMA show and has since racked up a range of accolades, including Best in Show at Radical Speed Sport, Chicago Autorama, Houston Autorama, and Toronto Motorama. It even made it to the prestigious Great Eight at the Detroit Autorama and the Top Five in the Goodguys Columbus Show. With such accolades, the GT 427 is no stranger to the spotlight, and now, it’s set to turn heads at its auction debut in January in Kissimmee, Florida, as one of the highlights of the Mecum event.
Refined Exterior
While the Mustang retains its original classic lines, Wicked Rides transformed its look with modern customizations that enhance the car’s iconic silhouette. A smooth, carbon fiber hood with a sleek scoop and an embossed GT 427 insignia hints at the vehicle's new-age prowess.
Modern Touches
The carbon fiber theme extends to the roof and deck lid, both sourced from Ringbrothers, known for their high-quality custom parts. The car's appearance is unified by a one-piece front end, flared fenders, and reimagined windows, creating a seamless flow from front to back. Modern LED lighting, including enlarged rear lights, gives the GT 427 a contemporary touch while staying true to its roots.
High-Performance Engine
Powering the GT 427 is a formidable Ford Coyote engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, sending power to the custom Forgeline wheels (18-inch in the front and 19-inch in the rear) wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. This setup, combined with the hidden Moser 9-inch rear end and a polished stainless steel exhaust system, makes for a potent driving experience. It’s a package that merges modern high-performance engineering with a classic muscle car ethos, giving the Mustang not only an updated look but also a driving experience built for enthusiasts.
Melting Pot Interior
The interior of the GT 427, while extremely well-crafted, could be a source of some controversy for Mustang purists. The dashboard and much of the rest of the cabin's visible elements have been transplanted from a Pontiac GTO. This means there is little to no sense of driving a Mustang from the inside. With the dashboard from a GM product, the Viper Gen 5 bucket seats provide a hint of Mopar, creating a melting pot of all the American brands within the cabin of this restomod.
Modern Amenities
Classic Instruments gauges add a vintage touch to the dashboard, while a Pioneer head unit, Morel front speakers, Kicker rear speakers, and a 10-inch Kicker subwoofer ensure that the car sounds as good as it looks. A telescoping steering column adds convenience, while the power front seats are wrapped in a ten-point roll cage—a choice that not only adds safety but also reinforces the car's status as a show-stopping, track-ready machine. The rear seat area has been sacrificed for structural integrity, emphasizing performance over passenger capacity.
Near Mint Condition
This Mustang GT 427 has barely seen the road, with an odometer reading of only 71 miles since its completion. Despite being crafted over years of careful planning and execution, this vehicle has remained nearly untouched, maintaining a "like-new" condition that will likely increase its appeal to collectors. The car's pristine state adds a unique element of rarity, making it a likely prize at the upcoming Mecum auction, where it is expected to draw significant attention.
Ready for Auction
Its extensive modifications, award-winning status, and almost brand-new condition place it among the standout vehicles of Mecum’s January auction. Bidders and enthusiasts alike are eager to see how much this expertly crafted Mustang will fetch, as it represents not just the best of custom car building, but also an interesting mashup of classic and modern Mustangs.
