West coast dreaming

Ford's pony car and the Pacific Coast highway. There are few things in the realm of American automobiles and legendary landmarks which go together better. Especially if that Mustang in question, is a California Special Edition.

An iconic Mustang with a special history

The California Special Mustang has a history which traces all the way back to 1968, when Shelby created the iconic limited edition pony car. Ford has kept that tradition alive over the decades and the 2019 iteration is perhaps the best California Special yet.

A true California can be converted

The 2019 California Special can be had with either coupe or convertible configuration. But you can hardly enjoy all that is marvelous about Californian motoring, with a metal roof shielding you from the more immersive driving experience. Viewed side-on, the black speed stripe is visible, one of the distinguishing styling features of this California Special Mustang.

Deeply impressive Danish sound

Inside, the California Special Mustang is equipped with a tremendous sound system. Developed by Danish acoustic specialist, Bang & Olufsen, it powers up to 1000-watts and relays via 12-speakers. The entire sound system has been developed specifically for the Mustang.

Hood details like the original

The hood features some visual references to the original 1968 California Special. Note the faded black racing stripe too. Below the hood is Ford's proven 5-liter naturally-aspirated V8.

Tidy splitter for a special edition pony car

Viewed from the front, the 2019 California Special shows its blacked-out grille. Below that, there is a splitter, sourced from Ford's Mustang Performance Pack options list. Continuing the black details are the California Special's wheels, which are darkened and of a five-spoke design.

A special that will help you blip to perfection

The subtle styling upgrades are neat and that advanced Bang & Olufsen sound system will make cruising to your favorite tunes a joy. But Ford has added some additional driver appeal to its 2019 California Special Mustang too. For those who opt for the six-speed manual transmission, there is now auto rev-matching, with sophisticated engine electronics that will allow you to execute absolutely flawless downshifts, even when heel-and-toeing into tight hairpin corners.
