Symbolic of its P-51 namesake

A peculiar color scheme and U.S. Air Force roundel on the door tell you that this Mustang is symbolic. The 'Old Crow' project car is a homage to American WW2 fighter pilot,  Colonel Bud Anderson, who nicknamed his P-51 Mustang plane 'Old Crow'. To commemorate the over 16 victories Anderson was credited with, the naming convergence between Ford's sportscar and one of America's greatest aircraft was built.

An Old Crow with new aero

Two Mustangs, their destinies many decades apart. The Old Crow commemoration car features a deep front splitter and rocker panels to improve airflow and improve the Mustang's downforce properties.

An all-aero rear end, which means business

At the rear, there is a large fixed-wing and diffuser below the bumper. The combination of these helps balance aerodynamic forces acting on the Mustang's rear axle. Ford has also replaced the traditional 'GT' badge with a special air force insignia roundel.

It sure is green - but not in the eco way you'd think

Powering the Old Crow is a 5-liter V8 engine, boasting 710hp. Helping the Old Crow Mustang to that impressive peak power output is Roush supercharger kit. Torque surges to a maximum of 610 lb-ft. Best of all is the classic olive green warbird paint scheme applied to the Old Crow V8's supercharger housing.

Red and green inside this Mustang machine

Ford's cabin detailing of this Old Crow Mustang is absolutely delightful, with a host of modern and classic fighter plane cockpit styling influences. The olive green hue from the engine is continued on the center console and door panels. Then there is a strong contrasting red finish on the shifter top and door handles, which mimic the color applied to ejector seat and weapon controls in most fighter planes.

A six-speed that begs to dump power to the rear axle

This Mustang GT has a lot of power and with a six-speed stick shifter, you can easily modulate the clutch and melt tires. Good thing that Ford decided to outfit its Old Crow with some very grippy rubber, which prevents wheelspin at the merest hint of throttle exuberance. Rolling the Old Crow along are 275/35R Continental ExtremeContact sport tires.

Uncle Jack approves

A legend of the automotive world, signing approval to a legend from military aviation. Jack Roush is a very keen aviator himself and the famous Ford speed merchant was only happy to be involved with this one-off Old Crow tribute car. The purpose of this Mustang build? It will be sold on auction, with the proceeds going to the Experimental Aircraft Association's youth and adult aviation programs.

Makes all the right noises

Although the Roush supercharged Old Crow Mustang will never sound as impressive as a P-51's 27-liter V12, Ford has certainly tried. There is a Roush air induction system with a special downpipe and Ford supplied an active exhaust, which features adaptive valving to provide the most booming possible exhaust note at full throttle.

Couldn't have been said better

“It is truly special to have the opportunity to honor a great American hero and a truly great friend of mine such as Col. Bud Anderson,” Jack Roush, Sr. said. “My father instilled in me a love of aviation and a deep respect for the brave pilots and airmen of World War II. Building this incredible ‘Old Crow’ Mustang, especially to support the next generation of America’s pilots, has been a very rewarding opportunity and one that we’re proud to share with the world.”
