It sure is pretty

Roush Performance debuted a custom-built 2018 Mustang GT that is inspired by the widened bodied 1970 Mustang Boss 429. The car is dubbed the 729 because it packs 729 horsepower that comes from a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine. The really cool thing about this Mustang is that widebody kit and engine notwithstanding the rest of the mods are all from off the shelf or ordered from a specialty shop. That translates to with enough coin in your pocket you could build a car that comes somewhat close to this concept before taking the big price bite of getting the powerplant. The upgrades are extensive inside and out, so let's get into what makes this Mustang concept so special.

Quality materials

The concept is painted in commemorative Grabber Green, which is another tip of the hat to the Boss 429s that were painted in this color. The exterior, which has been fitted with a widebody kit that was designed by Roush and 3D-printed by Stratasys. Then, race-inspired carbon fiber parts developed by Anderson Composites such as a front splitter and rear spoiler were added on. The side vents under the LED daytime running lights are bigger and the main intake is much wider than before. That front splitter mentioned enhances aero while giving the Mustang a much more aggressive stance.

No fake aero here

Where one would find the standard honeycomb grille, they will now find a new Roush version that features horizontal slats. The stock hood was tossed away in favor of one with a hump in the middle to accommodate the supercharger and to act as a ram air design to feed in the air. Also, on either side of that hump are heat extractors to help keep things cool. After the air gets some travel time by way of being mixed with fuel and then burnt in the engine it is unceremoniously shoved out through a custom high-flow exhaust. Under that bulgy hood is that Coyote V8 we all know and love that has been mated to an all-new Roush R2650 Eaton TVS Technology supercharger.

The faster it goes the faster it should stop

The Mustang is riding on a Roush three-way adjustable coilover suspension that allows for more than 1G of lateral acceleration. Since the engine has been boosted, the brakes have been upgraded with a set of Brembo GT-series performance setup. The wheels are now a set of Vossen/Roush RVS staggered wheels measuring 20x10 in the front and 20x11 in the rear. Wrapped around those wheels are sticky Continental Extreme Contact tires.

A performance geared cabin

Inside the car, there is a set of Recaro seats and a full Ford Accessories Katzkin leather package with Sparco 4-point harnesses. The backseat has been removed so that an Anderson Composites carbon fiber rear seat delete. Things were finished up with a Watson Racing roll cage.

While these parts can't be had in a "729" package, Roush does have a new round if RS packages coming to fit various budgets. The expected date for those packages is sometime after the 2018 Mustangs hit dealer lots.
