A Dark Horse Transformed

The Mustang Dark Horse already brings serious performance to the table, with its 500-horsepower naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 capable of hitting 60 mph in roughly four seconds. But Shelby American’s latest project, the 2026 Super Snake-R, takes that foundation and pushes it into far more extreme territory. Debuting at Monterey Car Week, the car represents a comprehensive rework aimed at both power and track capability.

Power Beyond the GTD

At the heart of the Super Snake-R is a supercharged version of Ford’s Coyote V8, tuned to deliver over 850 horsepower, around 350 more than the standard Dark Horse and even edging out Ford’s track-focused Mustang GTD, which makes 815 hp. Buyers can opt for either a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox or a 10-speed automatic, a choice not offered on the GTD.

Track-Ready Hardware

The upgrades extend well beyond the engine. Shelby equips the car with fully adjustable coilover suspension, front and rear sway bars, and caster-camber plates for fine-tuning. Braking comes from two-piece slotted rotors, while wider Michelin performance tires and lightweight alloy wheels maximize grip. Aerodynamic add-ons include a widebody kit, new bumpers, and a large rear spoiler designed to generate added downforce.

Lightweight, Despite the Muscle

Despite the wider stance, aero additions, and supercharger system, the Super Snake-R tips the scales at just 4,004 pounds—only 116 pounds heavier than the stock Dark Horse. That modest gain is negligible given the massive horsepower increase, making the Shelby one of the most potent Mustangs ever offered.

Inside the Snake

The interior follows Shelby tradition with bespoke touches. Performance bucket seats upholstered in Alcantara and leather carry the Shelby logo, while manual-equipped cars get a billet shift knob. Serialized plaques appear on the dash, sill plates, and floor mats, reminding occupants that this is no ordinary Mustang.

Price and Positioning

The 2026 Super Snake-R starts at $225,995, a figure that includes the donor Mustang Dark Horse. That pricing makes it roughly $100,000 less expensive than Ford’s Mustang GTD, which starts at $325,000. Shelby doesn’t position the car as a direct GTD competitor, the factory-built GT3-inspired machine boasts exotic features like a dual-clutch transaxle, pushrod suspension, and carbon-ceramic brakes, but for buyers focused on raw power and Shelby’s heritage, the Super Snake-R presents an alternative path.

A Different Kind of Mustang Statement

While the Mustang GTD represents Ford’s vision of a race-bred road car, the Super Snake-R reflects Shelby American’s formula of over-the-top horsepower, aggressive design, and track-oriented hardware. As one observer put it, this isn’t about replicating Ford’s GTD effort, “there’s no replicating a full factory effort like that”, but about building a car that delivers more power than most drivers will ever be able to fully exploit.
