Why 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is Worth the Price

The 2020 Shelby GT500 has a 5.2-liter supercharged hellion of an engine, 760 horsepower, and a price that is going to invite some of us to consider selling our car, plus our wives car, to afford the 10% downpayment!

Costs

In case you missed it, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is going to start at $70,300. That's a little over $10,000/100 horsepower. I’ll take it. Not the best bargain for the horsepower, but definitely not the worst, considering some cars with far less horsepower cost a significant amount more.

A Fair Price

The Shelby GT500 will truly be an absolute monster. The 5.2-liter V8 is lifted from the GT350, swaps the flat-plane crank for a cross-plane for strength, and straps a gigantic supercharger on top. It also receives loads of carbon fiber bits and a 9-speed Tremec DCT transmission. There is no argument the car is going to be a hell of a ride. But how do you feel about the price?

Competition

It seems to us to be a perfect price point. The first competitor that comes to mind is the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, for which the MSRP starts at $59,245, Hellcat Redeye at $69,850, and the Demon was sold for around $83,295. Chevy’s high-performance variant of the Camaro, the Camaro ZL1, starts around $62,000 with a lot less horsepower.

Other Competition

Other 700+ horsepower cars include Porsche GT2 RS, 488 Pista, McLaren 720S, Corvette ZR1, and a couple more. Clearly, these are far from the GT500’s price point, but that tells you the caliber of vehicle we are working with here. Other vehicles within the same $70,000 range as the GT500 include the BMW M4, Porsche 718 Cayman, Audi RS5, and several other vehicles that fall fairly short of the 700+ horsepower mark.

The Real Comparison

The real comparison might be the mid-engine Corvette. While only the entry-level C8 is within a shot of the Mustang, it is a vehicle that is similarly priced, and those that are shopping for a high-power pony car will no doubt be tempted by Chevy’s first attempt at the mid-engine sports car.

Regarless

Regardless of what the cost, we can't wait until we start seeing these snakes rolling around the streets of Detroit. Mostly, we can't wait to hear them driving around Detroit. Anytime a 700hp+ car is available to the masses, there's bound to be some interesting outcomes.
