Reasons to Get Mad

The 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC was just unveiled mere days ago, and it when it goes on sale in a few months, it'll sit atop the current pony car lineup - at least, if we don't count the ultra-expensive and exclusive GTD.

Though we don't yet have power figures or pricing for the Dark Horse SC, it figures to make at least some S550-generation Shelby GT500 owners angry - for a few good reasons.

Same Engine, More Power?

What we do know about the Dark Horse SC is that it will use the same sort of powertrain as the last GT500 - Ford's supercharged 5.2L V8, paired with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. It'll most likely make more than the GT500's 760 horsepower output as well, though that remains to be seen.

In any event, it'll be a bit painful for GT500 owners to see their cars upstaged in that manner, we imagine.

Handling Upgrades

On the same token, the Dark Horse SC is filled with cool new features, including a bevy of handling upgrades taken straight from the GTD program, along with the updated technology featured in the S650-generation Mustang, in general.

If nothing else, we imagine that alone will help the Dark Horse SC lap tracks quicker than the old GT500.

Track Pack Availability

The S550 generation GT500 could be had with the optional Carbon Fiber Track Pack, which added carbon fiber wheels and various aerodynamic upgrades. However, it was quite rare, which is why many refer to this combo as the "golden ticket."

The Dark Horse SC will get a similar Track Pack with carbon fiber goodies, along with carbon-ceramic brakes, and it seems like it will be more broadly available than the one offered on the GT500 - which certainly wouldn't be fair to those owners.

Technology

While some folks don't necessarily like having a bunch of screens in their cars, there's no denying that the S650-generation has far superior technology compared to the S550-gen Mustang, in general.

Thus, Dark Horse SC owners will get improved infotainment, a more modern and digital cockpit, and other up to date features compared to its predecessor.

Dissing Shelby?

It's been rumored for some time that Ford was thinking about going in a different direction when it came time to name the proper GT500 replacement, instead of paying licensing fees to Shelby.

However, the automaker went a bit further, dissing that company by calling the Dark Horse SC a "Ford Racing vehicle" because "Shelby doesn't race."

Silver Lining

Of course, this is also somewhat good news for Shelby GT500 owners, as we may never see a factory version of that model ever again. This means that the S550-generation model could easily continue to climb in value and become an even more coveted collectible than it already is.

Plus, it remains to be seen if the Dark Horse nameplate can come close to achieving the sort of lofty status that Shelby already enjoys.
